Jack Vettriano was born in Fife in 1951. He left school as a teenager, and briefly became an engineer before turning his hand to painting in his early twenties. Vettriano found that painting became more than just a hobby, and quickly dedicated himself to learning in his own time.
By the time Jack Vettriano was 38, painting had taken over his life. He decided to enter two of his paintings into the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition, and both were snapped up on the opening night. Encouraged by the reaction, Jack Vettriano decided to enter three paintings into the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London the following year, where he was overwhelmed with the response to his pieces.
In the twenty years which have followed, Jack Vettriano has become an international phenomenon. His paintings have become loved and admired across the world, and his intimate and honest depictions have struck a chord with ordinary folk, who see Vettriano's classic compositions and chic depictions as a breath of fresh air in the increasingly complex world of modern art.
Jack Vettriano has been awarded several accolades during his career. He has been awarded an OBE, an honorary degree from St. Andrew's University, and has been featured in several television programmes including the recent charity event Sports Relief where he painted a portrait of Zara Phillips. Vettriano's work is widely collected, and among his admirers are Jack Nicholson and Sir Alex Ferguson. Jack Vettriano's most recognisable painting, The Singing Butler, which was originally rejected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, sold at Sotheby's in 2004 forjust under £750,000.
