The London Art Fair 2008
This is the 20th London Art Fair, and over one hundred galleries will be exhibiting. It provides a healthy kickstart to the art calendar, and as I mentioned in December, it is well worth a visit.
This fair showcases Modern British Artworks, International Contemporary art, and art can be bought from £50 upwards. There is an emphasis on prints at the London Art Fair with artists releasing new edition runs to coincide with the fair, although museum quality artworks are also sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds. Don’t be intimidated by this though – there are many others out there who will have less money in their pocket!
The point of going to an art fair such as this is to explore and get your feelers out there as to what’s hot, what’s interesting, and what’s exciting to you. Look at everything and just take it in. Most of all, don’t be afraid to ask questions! My opinion is that there is far too much emphasis on hierarchy in today’s art world. Art fairs are a chance for everyone, from serious collectors to first time buyers, to mingle and learn from each other.
The London Art Fair takes place at the Business Design Centre in Islington, January 16th – 20th

Originals 08, The Contemporary Printmaking Show
This show, which accepts open submissions from both leading printmakers and new talent, and has been labelled by Sir Peter Blake RA as ‘… the best print show I’ve ever seen’.
Approximately 1400 submissions are received of which approximately 270 prints are exhibited. This show is surprisingly similar to an art fair, on a smaller scale – prints are an affordable commodity, and printmaking has a historical quality to it, which gives the exhibition both a contemporary and established feel.
As an art lover, this show is a fantastic opportunity to view original prints using printmaking methods such as silkscreens, linocuts, digital prints, lithography. Don’t be put off by the gallery setting – this is an annual exhibition for all.
Originals 08 takes place at the Mall Galleries, The Mall, nr Trafalgar Square, February 13th – 23rd
