The Art of Photography |
The relationship between art and photography has long been debated, with photography often looked down upon as the less important artistic medium, or merely as a sidekick to traditional art techniques. |

However, the use of photographic inspiration and influence is rife in contemporary art. Indeed, this is in itself a tradition which goes back to the invention of photography. Photography will always be a hugely unique tool to many artists, especially in a modern society which relies so heavily on the immediacy of imagery. This is the subject of a new exhibition at the Hayward Gallery this month, 'The Painting of Modern Life', which is one of our top exhibition tips this month. |

Here at CollectorsPrints, we notice a growing trend in the use of photographic images within our Limited Editions. This trend was first recorded in mass by Andy Warhol, and contemporary artist George Ioannou carries on in this vein. Ioannou produces bold and vibrant images relying heavily on popular and well known cultural icons, often candidly displayed in poses first captured on film, for example Jimi Hendrix and George Best.

The use or influence of photography is also clearly seen in the work of artists such as Sir Peter Blake or Ian Francis, for example, who are interested in contemporary culture and media, and who showcase this interest subtly through their art.
'The Painting of Modern Life', Hayward Gallery, London from 4th October to 30th December. |
