Art World Overview

The Bigger, the Better!

David Hockney RA has this year completed the largest painting of his career – ‘Bigger Trees Near Water’, a 40 foot by 15 foot masterpiece, it is made up of 50 smaller canvases, placed carefully side by side. This giant painting, depicting a scenic British countryside landscape, is the ideal way to feel involved in a piece of art – when standing in front of it, you cannot help but feel a part of it.

Hockney used digital computer technology to bring the image together and plan where canvases would go, and what they would contain. The painting itself had to be executed over a busy three week period.

What's New

Completion of such a large scale outdoor work is a puzzle that has challenged many artists over centuries; Hockney managed with the help of virtual aides and clear vision, as audacious in painting as ever.

The piece will now be displayed at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, and it is a breathtaking sight not to be missed.

The RA Summer Exhibition takes place at the main gallery in the Royal Academy of Arts, 11 June – 19 August 2007.
