Art World Overview

The Great Outdoors

If you enjoy the British countryside in the summer, why not combine it with your love of art? Outdoor sculpture has long been the subject of intense debate and interest, and this summer there are several places where it can be enjoyed.

Sunnyside Flats 2
Sunnyside Flats 2 by Anthony Caro

Sculpture pioneer Anthony Caro RA exhibits twelve of his series of ‘Flats’, first made in Toronto and hardly seen in the UK, at Roche Court near Salisbury in Wiltshire. These pieces from the 1970’s are an exploration of the scale of sculpture and its ability to become involved with a viewer on a more basic level.

Beached Huts
Hanging Trees by Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy’s work is the subject of a retrospective, with both new and old pieces on display at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Goldsworthy’s characteristic style is a sight not to be missed, and seeing his works in such a relaxed and complimentary environment brings out the very best in them. You should also check out sculpture parks in your local area for summer days out – there are treasures to be found locally!

What's New

Equally, why not create a sculpture park on a smaller scale in your own back garden? One of our most popular artists, Suzie Marsh, produces the perfect works for this venture. With both open and limited editions, her pieces appeal to all price ranges. The work is animal based sculpture, and Marsh evokes the best qualities of many well loved animals - from farmyard creatures, to wild beasts and household pets. Marsh’s pieces fit in flawlessly in outdoor areas, bringing a garden or patio to life. If you cannot find what you are looking for, Suzie often accepts commissions, and you will be able to work closely with her to achieve the perfect result.

Daisy, Small Lying Cow
Elephant Mother and Calf by Suzie Marsh

Anthony Caro’s work is on show at the New Art Centre, Roche Court, Wiltshire from the 12th of May to the 16th of September. Andy Goldsworthy’s pieces are at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park until the 6th of January.
