Still life artwork can refer to the depiction of a wide array of natural objects or those that are man made, commonly cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, fish, game or wine, or indeed any combination. Essentially anything that does not move or is no longer living can be considered a suitable subject. These subjects may be painted as a celebration of their beauty or interest on their own merits and their ability to provoke pleasure in the viewer; or rather more morbidly, they may be used to serve as a reminder of the brief passage of time. For that reason both skulls and the spoils of the hunt form a common theme. It is worth noting that in modern art the still life is often utilised as an interesting ‘neutral’ or control to form a basis for more complex experimentation.

The painting of still objects of interest can be seen as one of the principal genres of Western art and surprisingly there has been very little change in the subject matter utilised by a style that spans the centuries. What can be seen to have changed however, is the way in which the subject matter is presented, forever shifting with the style and technique of the time.  Peculiarly considering the understanding of the relevance of the style today, historically still life was considered not to have the import of other painting styles such as those depicting scenes from history (history painting) or portraiture, as the greatest significance was placed on the genres that were used to portray human life and endeavour.

Due to the style’s popularity there are a huge number of artists who have worked within the genre, some of those would be; Paul Cezanne, Roy Litchtenstein, Claude Monet, Caravaggio, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Andy Warhol, Piet Mondrian, Francisco Goya, Clara Peeters, Salvadore Dali, Vanessa Bell and Henri Rousseau.

Some of our artists creating Floral and Still Life Artwork would include; Danielle O’Connor Akiyama, Donald Hamilton Fraser, Stephanie Jacques, John Lowrie Morrison, Duncan MacGregor, Emilija Pasagic, Michelle Scragg, Michael Simpson, Darrell Warner and Pei Yang.
